Simone Simone was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon at 30 East Livingston Street in Tryon, North Carolina, one of eight children. Like a number of other African-American singers, she was inspired as a child by Marian Anderson and began singing at her local church, also showing prodigious talent as a pianist. Simone's international musical career spanned nearly 50 years, and her music influenced a range of younger musicians including among others Aretha Franklin and John Lennon. Simone's involvement in the civil rights' movement was significant as well. And she used her prominence and her music to support the social and political agendas of that movement. Dr Nina Simone Memorial Project The Simone memorial, Wendy Ingham, the owner of the Trade Street Gallery, said. “is an opportunity to honor Nina Simone and to give opportunities to others.” The Memorial Project comprises three distinct phases: 1) a life-size bronze sculpture by noted American sculptor William Behrends, 2) a needs-based scholarship open to applicants from all academic disciplines, and 3) a large-scale music festival. Government Site of the Town of Tryon Tryon Theater - Originally built in 1939 as a movie and vaudeville theater, it still uses it's original carbon arc projectors.
