Kiva.org
is a non-profit that allows you to make a small 0% loan
to low income entrepreneurs in the developing world (microfinance).
Individuals like you can help provide affordable working
capital for the poor -- money to buy a sewing machine,
livestock, etc. -- and empower them to earn their way out
of poverty.
You
dont need to be an animal activist or advocate to
oppose bear farming; bear bile farming is brutal, cruel
and unnecessary. Right now, most Americans have no
idea that bear poaching and the domestic sale, as
well as export, of bear gall bladders is an active black
market in the United States. This American black
market works with the Asian bear bile market, and this
global trade affects our black, brown (grizzly) and polar
bear populations. What is bear bile - Why is it obsolete - What is bear farming - What is HR 3029 - Why should I care - What Can I do help to stop bear poaching
Darfur
has been embroiled in a deadly conflict for over three
years. At least 400,000 people have been killed;
more than 2 million innocent civilians have been forced
to flee their homes and now live in displaced-persons
camps in Sudan or in refugee camps in neighboring Chad;
and more than 3.5 million men, women, and children are
completely reliant on international aid for survival. Not
since the Rwandan genocide of 1994 has the world seen
such a calculated campaign of displacement, starvation,
rape, and mass slaughter. www.darfurgenocide.org - www.savedarfur.org
Modern
Slavery
Slavery
exists today despite the fact that it is banned in most
of the countries where it is practised. At
least 12.3 million people are victims of forced
labour worldwide, reports a United Nations
International Labor Organization (ILO) study. It is
estimated that of these, more than 2.4 million are
victims of human trafficking. Examples of forced
laborinvoluntary work or services performed under
compulsion by threatare prostitution, military
service, and bonded labor for which workers earn little
or nothing, since their wages are retained to pay off a
debt. According to ILO Director General Juan Somavia,
such labor denies people their
basic rights and dignity. www.antislavery.org
Free
the Slaves
www.freetheslaves.net
Free the Slaves fights slavery all over the world by
helping people to freedom and to stable lives after
liberation, by removing slave labor from the products we
buy, and by helping governments enforce their own
anti-slavery laws. Free the Slaves is a nonprofit
organization based in Washington, D.C., that is leading U.S.
work against slavery.
Since slavery feeds directly into the
global economy,
it makes sense that we would be concerned by the ways in
which slavery flows into our homes through the products
we buy and the investments we make.
"'Wal-Mart:
The High Cost of Low Price' is an engrossing, muckraking
documentary about the retail giant that's been called
"the world's largest, richest and probably meanest
corporation." But if you're expecting an angry
diatribe, you're going to be disappointed. Instead, the
predominant feeling coming off the screen in the latest
film from director Robert Greenwald is a kind of baffled
disenchantment and sadness." - By Kenneth Turan of

The new report, released
today, also shows the impact that AIDS is having on the
lives of children. Every day there are an estimated 1,500
new HIV infections among children under the age of 15.
Fifteen million children have lost one or both parents to
the disease.
Children are the
missing face of AIDS, but what is still missing is a
global recognition of the impact of AIDS on
childrens lives, said UNICEF Executive
Director Ann M. Veneman.
The Battle
Against AIDS Will it be Won?
Worldwide, about 16,000
people become infected each day. It is said that more
