Modern Day Slavery

Slavery exists today despite the fact that it is banned in most
of the countries where it is practised.

“At least 12.3 million people are victims of forced labour worldwide,” reports a United Nations International Labor Organization (ILO) study. It is estimated that of these, more than 2.4 million are victims of human trafficking. Examples of forced labor—involuntary work or services performed under compulsion by threat—are prostitution, military service, and bonded labor for which workers earn little or nothing, since their wages are retained to pay off a debt. According to ILO Director General Juan Somavia, such labor “denies people their
basic rights and dignity.”

Free the Slaves fights slavery all over the world by helping people to freedom and to stable lives after liberation, by removing slave labor from the products we buy, and by helping governments enforce their own anti-slavery laws. Free the Slaves is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., that is leading U.S. work against slavery.

Since slavery feeds directly into the global economy, it makes sense that we would be concerned by the ways in which slavery flows into our homes through the products we buy and the investments we make.

Help Stop the Spread of AIDS

The new report, released today, also shows the impact that AIDS is having on the lives of children. Every day there are an estimated 1,500 new HIV infections among children under the age of 15. Fifteen million children have lost one or both parents to the disease.

“Children are the missing face of AIDS, but what is still missing is a global recognition of the impact of AIDS on children’s lives,” said UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman.

The Battle Against AIDS Will it be Won?
Worldwide, about 16,000 people become infected each day. It is said that more than 90 percent live in developing countries. About 1 in 10 is a child under 15 years of age. The rest are adults of whom over 40 percent are women and over half are between the ages of 15 and 24. —World Health Organization and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS.

With an estimated one out of four HIV-positive Americans unaware of their infection, increased opportunities for testing are critical.

"I think you can look at the ads in Craigslist's Adult Services section and tell if they look like ads for legitimate massages, Or if they look like the same escort and prostitution businesses, some of which were pimping minors, that have been on advertised on Craigslist since its inception." more

Does Craig want this to happen in the US? The reported cases of child sexual abuse have increased by 400% in the past 8 - 9 years in South Africa -
