The City of Winchester is located in Frederick County, which borders Maryland and West Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley. Winchester is the northernmost community in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Winchester was the first settlement and first chartered city west of the Blue Ridge (1752). Originally called Frederick Town after the father of King George III, Winchester was renamed after the ancient capital of England by Col. James Wood, the city's founder. Due to its strategic location, Winchester played a major role in all the wars fought on U.S. soil. It as the center of defense in the French and Indian War. Colonel George Washington made Winchester his headquarters when he was sent to build a line of forts to defend the Virginia frontier. In the American Civil War, Winchester was headquarters for both Jackson and Sheridan. Five major battles were fought for control of this strategic crossroads area, and the city itself changed hands 70 times.

The Museum, now open
in its final home, the Frederick County Courthouse, tells
the history of the war where over 600,000 Americans died.
Exhibits look at the daily life of the soldier, major
advances in battlefield technology, and the many splendid
uniforms from the North and South that reflected the deep
commitment the troops felt to their respective cause.
George
Washington’s Office Museum - Corner of
Braddock and Cork streets
The center room of
George Washington's Office Museum was used by Colonel
George Washington, commander of the Virginia Regiment, as
an office between September, 1755 and December, 1756
while he was building Fort Loudoun. The fort, located
just north of downtown Winchester, was the largest of the
series of forts Colonel Washington was building from the
Potomac River to the North Carolina border to protect the
colony of Virginia from Indian raids during the French
and Indian War.
